Biotechnology on Wheels

The BioTechnikum truck operated by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) at BIOTECHNICA 2011 is certainly worth a visit for anyone interested in getting a quick overview of the myriad exciting possibilities opened up by the fast-developing field of biotechnology. The truck’s many displays are organized into four theme areas that illustrate various biotech applications and uses. Visitors can, for instance, learn how biotechnology can be used to develop drugs, extract high-value substances from plants and produce environmentally-friendly textiles.

Biotech Switch for Neural Stem Cells

Scientists from the DFG-Center for Regenerative Therapies Dresden (CRTD) will be presenting an experimental model for the controlled proliferation of neural stem cells in the brains of adult mammals at BIOTECHNICA 2011. The method, which has been successfully tested on mice, involves genetically programmed viruses and a specially developed protein complex. When a stem cell divides, it usually creates one stem cell and one differentiated cell, such as a neuron. The CRTD’s method encourages the formation of greater numbers of neurons.

The most exciting Evening of BIOTECHNCA 2011...

...is the evening of the first day of the show, starting at 6.30 p.m. in Hall 1 of the Convention Center (CC).

The prize-giving ceremony for the internationally renowned and keenly contested 9th EUROPEAN BIOTECHNICA AWARD will follow hot on the heels of the official BIOTECNICA Opening Ceremony, which will be hosted by Lower Saxony’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Jörg Bode, and the former German Minister of Research and Technology, Professor Heinz Riesenhuber. 2011 will be the first time that the opening proceedings for BIOTECHNICA are held on the same evening as BIOTECHNICA NIGHT. The organizers are expecting more than 1,000 guests from industry, business and government.

Venture Capital Conference for Entrepreneurs

The 2011 Bio@VentureConference at this year's BIOTECHNICA fair is targeted at providers and seekers of venture capital.

At this year’s conference, the founders of twelve start-up companies will present their innovative ideas to business angels, banks and investment companies. The presentations will be complemented by informative seminars run by business consultancy Ernst & Young and US life sciences-sector consultancy TCG.

Wound Dressings Straight out of "Spiderman"

A display by the Laboratory for Regenerative Biology in Plastic Surgery at Hannover Medical School (MHH) at BIOTECHNICA 2011 explores new applications for spider silk in regenerative medicine. The patented new material at the center of the display consists of numerous fine silk threads that are chemically bonded to each other to form specialized structures that are not achievable through normal weaving techniques. These structures can be used, among other things, as wound dressings.

Pipette Racks of the Future"

...was the name of recent crowdsourcing project that German biotech company Eppendorf ran earlier this year in order to gather new ideas from its customers. Now, at BIOTECHNICA 2011, Eppendorf is presenting its customers’ futuristic ideas and product designs to the public for the first time. The prize-giving ceremony for the most innovative suggestions will be held on 12 October at the company's exhibition stand.

Tracking down Offenders...

...is not the exclusive domain of police detectives. Biotechnologists also often have a role to play. Anyone interested in finding out how biotechnologists can help to solve crimes should attend the 4th Life Science Spotlight lecture forum on 13 October at BIOTECHNICA 2011. The forum kicks off at 12 noon with a presentation by Professor Marion Nagy from the Berlin-based Charité Institute for Forensic Medicine on the Institute’s latest research findings in the field of forensic genetics and their practical applications. The next speaker is Dr. Iris Schulz from LGC Forensics-IfB LGC. Dr. Schulz will be discussing DNA – the bane of modern-day criminals – DNA analysis techniques and unusual cases. Dr. Rainer Schubbert of Eurofins Mediogenomix will then illustrate the trend towards a more coordinated approach to crime fighting in Europe. He will present a case study on the development and implementation of a European standard set of DNA markers to help streamline the typification of human DNA samples.

The Future of Medicine

Major trends and discoveries in medical imaging are the subject of a workshop run by the EU project AMI-4Europe at BIOTECHNICA 2011. The one-day workshop, which starts at 10 a.m. on 13 October, will feature a number of lectures, including a presentation by Professor Ingrid Hilger from Jena University Hospital on a method for destroying tumors using oscillating magnetic particles; a presentation by Professor Axel Haverich from Hannover Medical School on the applications of three-dimensional organ imaging before, during and after heart surgery; and a lecture by Professor Frank Duffner from the Winghofer Medicum private clinic in Rottenburg, Germany, on image-guided neurosurgery procedures.

Rapid Test Device enables early Detection of Crop Diseases

Scientists from the Fraunhofer Institute for Molecular Biology and Applied Ecology (Fraunhofer IME) are presenting a new low-cost rapid test device at BIOTECHNICA 2011 that enables farmers to carry out on-site health checks on their crops. The device uses a magnetic field to locate pathogens and can detect viral or fungal infestations on plants even before they are visible to the naked eye.
