´Multimedia Exhibition

On the ground floor of the road-show vehicle, visitors are welcomed by a multimedia exhibition. It can be explored either together with the accompanying scientists or on one's own: theme displays, multimedia terminals and around thirty exhibits convey this future technology's basics and its fields of research and application in a playful and varied manner. Thus, also laypeople can understand how small pieces of genetic material can help to diagnose disease or the functional principle of an immunological test procedure (ELISA).
Another part of the exhibition takes visitors on a journey into the interior of a human cell: the educational multi-media game "Bodymover" makes it possible to explore the cell's components, steering through the cell by shifting one’s body weight.

Insights into practical Research Work

Moreover, on its grand tour through Germany, the ground floor serves as a modern laboratory infrastructure for biotechnology practicals. Pipettes and centrifuges, fermenter and PCR-Maschine help school classes to get insights into practical research work.
In lab practicals that take around two and a half hours and span three aspiration levels, youth can e.g. isolate DNA from mouth mucosa cells or produce cheese using enzymes. Here, in accord with the teachers, experiments from three areas can be selected: experiments with genetic material, with proteins or focusing on technical applications of biotechnology.

Lectures, Discussion Rounds and the Biotech Cinema

The mobile information campaign's focus are the topics health and nutrition, agriculture, production and environmental protection as well as the structure of and the career perspectives in the biotechnology landscape of Germany. They figure prominently in lectures, discussion rounds and the biotech cinema. For these formats, the roadshow vehicle's top floor provides ample space.

Visitors of BIOTECHNICA can see the diversity of topics and the practical relevance of the initiative for themselves: During a tour they have the opportunity to explore the mobile experience world individually, or they can enter a dialogue and direct their questions at the accompanying scientists.
